MUI NE & HO CHI MINH CITY

October 14, 2016

From sleepy, surf town living to a shock of electric, buzzing city life infused with some of the most heavy history, Mui Ne and Ho Chi Minh marked the final chapter of our tour through Vietnam. To clarify, in no way are these two cities, or the experiences we had there, at all related. In fact, they are quite polar opposites. The laidback nature of Mui Ne had us transcending into utter serenity and inner peace, while our quick stopover in Ho Chi Minh City was Vietnam's way of saying, "Look at all this you have yet to see," and beckoning our eventual return. I can promise we will answer to the demands of those whispering spirits, without a doubt.

For now, let's relive the magic that was those final three days in Nam...

HOI AN

October 4, 2016

Hoi An is a sparkling and scenic gem right in the heart of Vietnam. With a name that translates to English as "peaceful meeting place," Hoi An is just that: cozy and quaint, and famous for its Old Town where motorists are prohibited, and pedestrians and bike riders are free to parade among the beautiful bridges and walkways that line the river. As a Western tourist, the vibe of the inner city sparked similarities in my mind to small Spanish (or generally European) villages, with yellow-colored, closely packed buildings with terra cotta sloped roofs, with vines and lanterns draped all throughout. The Old Town is well-groomed, well designed, and beautifully curated, which gives the impression of a tourist trap but is for the most part, just that authentic. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, after all, for being such an "exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Its buildings and its street plan reflect the influences, both indigenous and foreign, that have combined to produce this unique heritage site."

There is so much to see, do, and eat in the Old Town and in the entire region that surrounds it. It felt like we did so much, but in the grand scheme of all the possibilities, was merely just a taste of what Hoi An has to offer.

Falling in love with Vietnam, one bite at a time.

Hue Now!

September 23, 2016

After surviving our first (of many) overnight bus rides, we arrived shortly after sunrise in Huế. It didn’t take long for us to realize that Huế was completely different from Hanoi, between the culture and history of the city to the physical environment of it. This was a sentiment we experienced throughout each city we visited in Vietnam, which always kept us on our toes and falling more in love with the country.

HANOI & HA LONG BAY

September 20, 2016

Fleets of scooters and motorcycles with blaring horns charge the streets alongside sidewalks brimmed with shops and tiny plastic chairs and tables serving as restaurant “patios.” This is Hanoi’s Old Quarter, the living, breathing, heart of the city. Overwhelming to all senses, Hanoi is especially a “cacophony of smells” as Grace put it best. Every inhale presents you with a new discovery. Curbside grills and spices one moment, gasoline and smog the next, and if you dare to breathe again, you might just be rescued by fresh flowers and incense.

The capital of Vietnam marked the beginning of our journey, and with that was a very immediate and immersive introduction to Vietnamese culture. Although we stayed in an area that was frequented by many tourists and backpackers, we walked the streets and dined alongside the locals, giving us some great insight as how to blend in best. Hanoi is a proper city, the type that roughs you up a little bit before showing you its soft side, but the embracing kindness of the people there had us falling in love with this country right from the start.

NYC Recap & Photo Diary // May 2016

May 30, 2016

That city that never sleeps has been like a second home to me… My mom and her whole side of the family are from there, so I like to think I was born with a little bit of New Yorker in my blood. I’ve been making trips to take a bite out of the big apple every since I was little, and the trips have become more frequent over the past few years. I have to say, the dynamic of my visits totally changed when I started going on my own. It’s nice to vacation with family, with the security of a hotel and nice dinners, but I discovered a whole new side of the city, and myself!, when I had to learn to navigate the streets – and the metro – independently. Every time I visit I feel like I uncover a whole new world within the city, which always keeps me coming back for more.
